“We believe in dressing up in gorgeously impractical things, like tulle, sequins, sparkles and lace” – Pinterest

I think we can all agree that hair accessories go a long way to completing the ‘bridal’ look. With so many different types of dresses for different styles of Brides, there are many options to choose from. Below are just five examples of ways you can wear your hair for your day!

1. VEIL

Let’s start with the most traditional of hair accessories – the veil! Dating back to the ancient Roman times, the veil has always been synonymous with purity. As time progressed, many brides opted to use whatever was on hand (during a time when you married in your Sunday best). You can thank Queen Victoria for making white wedding dresses and veils all the rage again! This led to the veil becoming a status symbol as well (“my veil is longer than yours, my fabric is more luxurious than yours”, etc.). Today, veils are made in varying lengths and materials.

Erika and Michael had a beautiful garden wedding at  Cecil Green Park House, and wore a long, flowing cathedral length veil to compliment her Couture by Francesca gown. Since she wore her hair down in soft waves, the veil was easy to slip on and off for her ceremony and reception.

Demi and Wayne had an elegant multicultural wedding at Dockside Restaurant , where she wore a finger-tip veil to compliment her white ballgown-style wedding dress for her ceremony, in addition to a stunningly embroidered green kimono for the reception. The Love Team Hair + Makeup swept Demi’s hair up into a sleek bun as Wayne’s daughter, Faye, did Demi’s makeup, so she could switch between the veil for the Ceremony and Dinner.

When Alannah and Manny were married over the holidays, she decided to go full drama with her custom veil from Jane Rhyan the collection, right down to the snowflake details on her blush cathedral length veil.  This is definitely a great way to incorporate your wedding theme and colour palette for your day.

2. FLORAL CROWN

Another romantic trend is using florals instead. Dating back to the ancient Greeks, flower crowns were part of many rituals. Some cultures, like the Ukraine, flower crowns were part of the wedding traditions as a symbol of purity. Fast forward to the 1960’s, where the lovable hippies made them mainstream and fun to wear daily. Today, we see a resurgence of the flower crown for the modern bride.

Jessica and Patrick had a gorgeous and intimate garden wedding at Grouse Mountain, where Jessica wore a stunning flower crown by Postmark Flowers. She added the veil for the ceremony, but removed the veil and kept the crown for the dinner and dancing.flower crown

Helen and Justin incorporated both her eastern root and his western roots, wearing her traditional red tea ceremony dress and changing into a white wedding dress afterwards for their ceremony at the The Law Courts Inn. To connect both sides, Helen wore a delicate white rose flower crown from Onely Design Studio

3. FLORALS

If the idea of a flower crown is too much for you, consider streamlining it with only a few petals. With the help of Faye Smith Agency, Claire wore a delicate floral headband with yellow buds provided by Floral Design by Lili, which complimented her pixie hair cut.

Kim opted to have a barrette made of succulents, made by Postmark Flowers. Her decor themed at the venue were a bunch of mini succulents so she wanted it to match. She is also a dancer so she didn’t a veil to cramp her style when dancing in her Jimmy Choo high heels!

4. JEWELRY

If flowers and veils don’t suit you, you can also use other accessories. Perhaps you want to incorporate some heirlooms in your look, like a brooch made into a hair pin.

Emily decided to have an intricate hairpiece to accent her updo for her intimate elopement.

5. HAT

If you’re the modern type of bride who wants something totally different, consider a hat! You can pick any shade or style to compliment your dress and achieve the trendy, boho vibe.

Gabi and Connor wore matching hats from Brixton and Goorin Bros. that complimented their outfits. It suited them perfectly!

BONUS: NATURAL (nothing at all!)

After all this, you decide that none of these work for you!  And that’s ok! The modern bride is able to choose the best look for her style and personality.

Sam and Tom celebrated their destination wedding at the Sea to Sky Gondola, and chose to wear her long hair half up, in an elegant braid.

Amanda and Rob held their wedding at the Vancouver Rowing Club, and she chose to also wear her hair down with a braid as well.

Consider what your final look will be, and factors such as whether you’ll be outside at the beach, in a forest or in a church. If the ‘boho’ with a hat or ‘natural’ is more you, then go for it! If you decide you want to go with the veil, you have options on length (blusher to cathedral) and material (tulle, lace, etc.)! We can’t wait to see what you decide to do.
