We are giving you 6 cake ideas for your wedding day. Buttercream, naked, show stopping, fondant, script, or no cake at all!
“Love is when you have a really amazing piece of cake, and it’s the very last piece, but you let him have it” – E. Lockhart.
Can I get two hands waaaay in the air for cake! Woo! Ever the student, I went down the rabbit hole of the history behind the wedding Cake (with the first ‘version’ dating back to ancient Greece!) and it’s meaning and symbolism (white for purity, height meant status, etc.). Like many elements to a wedding, there are traditional parts that are nice to include if it’s meaningful to you, but at the end of the day, just do you! The cakes we see now are a reflection of our Clients; some are modern, some are romantic, and some are just dang fun!
ELEGANT + MODERN
Nick and Florence had a sleek, city-vibe to their nuptials this past New Years Eve at the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel, with a colour palette using shades and textures of white. Against the city night backdrop, it was stunning! Since their florals were minimal, using mostly white orchids, Jenny from Jenny Bakes created a modern silhouette – a two-tiered white buttercream cake, accented with white phalaenopsis orchids provided by Our Little Flower Company. If you like clean lines and structured florals, this style might be right for you!
WHIMSICAL + ROMANTIC
Novia and Paul were married at the beautiful Hart House, a heritage venue in Deer Lake Park, right on the water. Since their style was more romantic, Alannah from Cakes By Peddie created a beautiful three-tiered fondant cake. Including their colour palette of dusty blue, gold accents and bits of greenery, the top tier had primarily white with edible gold flecks, the second tier was brushed with blue (almost like waves, appropriate for this waterfront reception), and the bottom tier included a handwritten quote that said, “May my heart be the softest place you fall, may this love be the wildest place you run.” – Butterflies Rising.
SIMPLE YET EFFECTIVE
Helen and Justin were married at the Law Courts Inn on the beautiful patio overlooking the city, and they celebrated with a naked cake, from Alannah at Cakes By Peddie. The couple wanted a simple buttercream, then the flowers were added on. Make sure you ask the baker to put on the flowers on site. This is so the baker can complete their entire vision and fix and small or large details on site. Bakers sometimes bring their own flowers or they request for your florist to give them cake flowers. Cake flowers are prepped, and cleaned as the cake will be edible.
Or go naked! Embrace the elements! Here’s more inspiration for you from a photoshoot we did at the Cheakamus Centre in Squamish. Even the little bit of beading between each tier adds a bit of extra oomph to the cake! For those of you don’t know what that is, lemme educate you! A “naked cake” is the idea of scraping the excess icing off the cake down to, basically, the crumb coat. So, you get cake and some icing, but not a mouthful of it if that ain’t your thing! Naked cakes are especially delicious when you accent them with fruit or when you decorate them with florals. They feel less messy than a standard cake, and maybe that’s your jam! This was made by Homemade by Harris.

PERSONAL TOUCHES
Eleanor and Dave decided to get married in the privacy of their beautiful backyard, surrounded by an intimate guest count of family and friends. They included so many lovely and meaningful touches to their day, but what made their day extra sweet was that they chose to decorate their own cake! Dave picked up a delicious cake from Sweet Revenge on Main Street, and they spent a few private moments in the morning garnishing the cake with edible florals and adding their cake topper – a rabbit and robot. The day is about you two, and these private moments of creation are an awesome way to reconnect you to the moment, when all the other ‘stuff’ gets in your way!

MAKE A STATEMENT!
Alannah and Manny celebrated their winter wedding right before Christmas, this past year at the beautiful Sutton Place Hotel. To say their wedding was high drama, would be a massive understatement!! With a truffle station and Gingerbread house/Mansion to elegant hand-painted cake favours on pedestals, there were options for everyone! Especially their 6’ tall, ‘Candy Cane’-inspired wedding cake. It.Was.Magical. If you’re going to have a cake, then why not go ALL OUT, and have a truly delicious work of art. And since Alannah and Manny are the masterminds behind Frolic + Forage Catering and Cakes By Peddie, it was also a way to show their craft to their family and friends.
BUT I DON’T WANT CAKE…
Do you need cake? Well, not technically. While it’s nice to have (and we do suggest even a giant cupcake to cut for photos), some Couples just don’t want it! However, you do want something sweet to nibble on. What about a Donut wall or Dessert Station? We love the idea of a donut wall, because a) they’re easy to grab, and b) logistically, it doesn’t take up a lot of space. Most guests will indulge in a few sweet bites, so these are great options to walk past and swipe a sweet.
